For decades, scientists have sought to learn the secret to living a long and vibrant life. And while the quest to increase lifespan may, at times, seem insurmountable, one population offers a valuable peek into this phenomenon, revealing ways we might be able to live to see 100.
So what’s their secret? Turns out it’s the culmination of several factors—but some of them might surprise you. While many believe that genes play a major role in how long they’ll live, researchers say that living to see 100 is only 30 percent genetic makeup. More important factors may be lifestyle, disposition and attitude.
One characteristic centenarians have in common is that they’re often very happy-go-lucky people, rarely letting themselves get down or depressed. Another is that they tend to manage stress better than others. Remarkably, but not surprisingly, science has proved time and time again that these traits lend to improved health.
Check out this video, in which a few centenarians dish their secrets to a long and happy life.
